Proteus Ocean Group, a leading for-profit social enterprise in ocean exploration, has officially partnered with the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation (CARMABI) in a significant move for ocean research. This collaboration, solidified through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in January 2024, aims to advance ocean science through the development and operation of PROTEUS™, the world’s most advanced underwater habitat.
Curaçao boasts one of the Caribbean’s healthiest coral ecosystems, providing scientists with unparalleled access to a thriving reef. Leveraging CARMABI’s expertise and PROTEUS™’s technology, researchers have already begun collecting valuable data on variables such as temperature, water quality, and acoustics. This data will inform conservation strategies to safeguard Curaçao’s coral reefs, with initial findings showing promising insights into ocean temperature and reef health.
Dr. Manfred van Veghel, Director of CARMABI, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “CARMABI looks forward to embracing the future of underwater science and exploration with PROTEUS™. Our institute’s rich research history and deep understanding of marine ecosystems, combined with PROTEUS™’s innovative capabilities, will unlock discoveries that are only possible with sustained presence underwater.”
PROTEUS™’s modular underwater laboratory habitat will enable scientists, aquanauts, educators, and artists to live and work at depth, fostering continuous exploration and innovation. Through education and storytelling initiatives, PROTEUS™ aims to engage global audiences and raise awareness of the ocean’s critical role in supporting life on Earth.
Fabien Cousteau, founder and chairman of Proteus Ocean Group, highlighted the significance of the partnership with CARMABI, stating, “PROTEUS™ represents a groundbreaking advancement in ocean technology, with the potential to revolutionize ocean science. We are thrilled to collaborate with CARMABI for our inaugural location, leveraging their expertise to make PROTEUS™ a catalyst for ocean discovery.”
In addition to partnering with CARMABI, PROTEUS™ has forged alliances with organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). Recognized by the IOC Executive Secretary as part of the UN Ocean Decade, PROTEUS™ is poised to drive innovation and research in ocean exploration.
