How it all started
Hòfi Wawuya is a business founded in 2019 in Curaçao and we are known for our renowned Moringa oil, which is extracted from Curaçao’s Moringa trees. Among the benefits and uses of this product are eczema and joint pain relief, topical use as a cleansing agent and as a moisturizer for skin and hair, and as a cooking oil that is high in protein and oleic acid, which is a monounsaturated and healthy fat. Moringa oil also contains several bioactive compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both when ingested and used topically.
Our business model is predicated on using naturally growing plants and upcycling natural waste products into final products. We believe this is especially relevant in Curaçao where there are lots of plants with numerous benefits for health, beauty, and nutrition. Our founders Joeri Oltheten and Christiaan Winkel are serial entrepreneurs who share a deep love for Curaçao and believe in regenerative business practices: businesses that give more than they take.
The reactions to our products
Through our business model, we look to contribute to changing Curaçao’s culture of importing goods and the outdated take-make-waste paradigm. We ultimately aim to stimulate a mindset of production on our island, making the population realize that we can be even better at producing products than we are at consuming them. That is why we are very happy with the way the public has taken to what we are putting on the market — they have shown us uses for our products that we weren’t even aware of. At a certain point, our production could barely keep up with the demand! So we decided to ask people to bring us Moringa seeds, for which we would pay them a fair wage.
Consumers really feel an emotional connection with our brand and some have even expressed that they are proud of us. That is something very special to hear. Other highlights in our entrepreneurial journey include the first time we managed to produce our cold-pressed oil, our first distribution deal with a major supermarket (Mangusa Hypermarket) on the island, and our first international distribution deal with Curacare Bonaire.
Our motivation and plans for the future
We are very proud of what we are doing — we make products that improve people’s well-being and raise awareness on the value and importance of Curaçao’s plants for health, beauty, and nutrition. In so doing, we are also helping Curaçao brand itself as a wellness destination, which is an enormous source of motivation.
In the future, we plan on exporting our products to Europe, the USA and the rest of the world. We want as many people as possible to discover the benefits of plant-based final products for health, nutrition, and beauty.
The business opportunities
The purchase of land for Wawuya presents a lucrative business opportunity for potential investors as we will use this land for the planting of trees that we can use to produce more of our products. Our dream is to have our own forest of naturally growing plants right here on the island and we aim to use innovative agricultural techniques such as syntropic agroforestry.
