Curaçao Could Become A Hub For The Export Of Reusable Energy In The Region

Carlson Manuel, Curaçao’s minister plenipotentiary, met with Rob Jetten, the Dutch minister of climate and energy, at the beginning of last month to discuss Curaçao’s possible role as a hub for the export of reusable energy in the Caribbean and Latin American region. The possibility exists that Curaçao might use the energy produced by windmills to produce fuel and raw materials. And according to a report by the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Toegepast-Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek (Netherlands Organization for Applied Natural Science), known as TNO, Curaçao possesses ideal locations for the production of at-sea wind energy.

These findings were provided by Rob Jetten in a letter he wrote to the Dutch Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives). He specifically notes the potential for Curaçao to establish itself as a regional hub for the production and export of hydrogen, ensuring the island’s access to reusable energy and boosting sustainable economic growth. Hydrogen is a clean fuel, made from water and electricity. It is suitable for replacing natural gas for heating or petrol in cars, for example.

Jetten will carry out a certification pilot together with the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (Netherlands Enterprise Agency), known as RVO. Jetten wants to be able to brief the House on the results of this before the end of this year.
