Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) is preparing for a strategic working visit to Colombia from October 26 to November 2, 2025, aimed at strengthening Curaçao’s national housing initiative, Mi Kas Awor. The mission seeks to build partnerships with Colombian institutions experienced in large-scale affordable housing programs and to translate that knowledge into practical solutions for Curaçao.
Why Colombia? Colombia’s Mi Casa Ya program has become a reference model for facilitating home ownership in Latin America, offering subsidies and structured financing to low- and middle-income families. By partnering with institutions behind this program, Curaçao hopes to accelerate its own housing solutions with tested systems and governance.
The visit is being organized in collaboration with the ministries of Social Development (SOAW), Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP), and Finance, and is expected to lead to concrete agreements with Colombian government agencies, builders, and financiers. A key focus will be learning from the success of Colombia’s nationally recognized Mi Casa Ya program.
During the mission, the Curaçaoan delegation will meet with Belga María Rivas, Colombia’s Minister of Housing, as well as members of the Colombian Parliament and Senate. Meetings are also planned with leading construction and banking associations such as CAMACOL and Asobancaria, both of which play central roles in housing policy and development in Colombia.
A visit to the Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA), the country’s national training service, is also scheduled. There, the delegation will explore Colombia’s effective work-study programs for construction workers and technical trades. This area that aligns closely with Curaçao’s goal of developing skilled local labor for future housing projects. Discussions are further planned with CAFAM, the Colombian institution responsible for administering and distributing housing and rent subsidies, to learn from their approach to social housing support.
FKP says the mission is designed to ensure that Curaçao begins Mi Kas Awor with “robust, credible, and sustainable implementation capacity.” The organization believes that working closely with institutions that have decades of experience in housing development will help lay the foundation for a program that is both effective and enduring.
Mi Kas Awor is one of the most ambitious housing initiatives in Curaçao’s history. It represents a long-term investment in affordable housing, economic growth, and social stability. Over the next fifteen years, the program is expected to create more than 31,000 jobs, provide housing opportunities to thousands of families, and reduce poverty levels by up to 15 percent. Beyond construction, the initiative aims to strengthen local capacity, promote sustainable urban development, and improve the overall quality of life on the island.
According to FKP, this collaboration with Colombia reflects a new phase in Curaçao’s approach to housing policy — one grounded in partnership, knowledge exchange, and innovation. By combining international expertise with local determination, Curaçao hopes to transform Mi Kas Awor from a national program into a cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable development for the island’s people.
