A Curaçao government and private sector delegation is currently in Dubai on an investment mission to participate in Expo 2020. This is a World Expo, which is a large international exhibition designed to highlight the national achievements of participating nations. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in various parts of the world at a specific location for a set period of time, usually between three and six months.
The current World Expo, hosted by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates from October 1st, 2021 to March 31st, 2022, was originally scheduled to take place from October 20th, 2020 to April 10th, 2021. However, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite being postponed, organizers kept the name Expo 2020 for marketing and branding purposes.
As one of the participating nations at Expo 2020, Curaçao will be expanding its efforts to bring new investors into Curaçao’s renewable energy, water, and tourism industries. As illustrated by circular economy-expert Juan-Carlos Goilo, a total of 95 unique initiatives on the island are currently operating in alignment with one or more principles of ‘doughnut economics.’ This is an economic model, first coined by English economist Kate Raworth in a 2012 article for Oxfam, that connects environmental, financial, and social principles to ensure an economy that thrives for all people within the means of the living world.
The shape of the doughnut represents the following: the inner edge of the doughnut stands for the social foundation, the outer edge of the doughnut stands for ecological boundaries, and the space between represents the safe and just place that provides the basic needs of everyone without damaging the earth beyond its ecological limits.
What the delegation will be doing at the expo
The intention of the trade mission is to establish commercial relationships with the United Arab Emirates and other countries with shared interests, who want to do business with Curaçao, and to engage with new partners by inviting them to explore investment opportunities and strengthen Curaçao’s relationship with longstanding trade partners. Presenters from the public and private sectors of the island will provide insights into investment opportunities from Curaçao’s booth under the Netherlands Pavilion.
