The development association, Porto Kòrsou, unveiled a plan this month for the creation of a new project in the port of Willemstad named Plaza Porto Kòrsou. This plan was developed in collaboration with the Dutch architectural firm, JHK Architecten, and will comprise a building that will be the centerpiece of an interlocking network of venues that will generate jobs and bolster commercial and urban activities in Curaçao’s capital.
The building will have a magical-like facade, with a panoramic view of the harbor and the island, and it will house business units, shops, and restaurants. It will also be situated right on Saint Anna Bay, on the site where the island’s oil refinery is currently located, and will have a marina where boats and yachts can anchor.
A crucial component of the Plaza Porto Kòrsou project is to champion sustainability in the Willemstad area, making it greener with a beltline for cyclists and rollerskaters, in addition to sustainable industries such as biochemistry, bio-energy, and hydrogen production. Furthermore, the Plaza Porto Kòrsou building itself will be made from sustainable materials and will be designed to produce more than it consumes by using solar and wind energy to power the building.
Porto Kòrsou aims to make this structure a calling card for Curaçao, similar to what the Eiffel Tower is for Paris and the Christ the Redeemer statue is for Rio de Janeiro. Adding to that objective, this project also aims to create a yacht marina in the Saint Anna Bay harbor, which will further add to Willemstad’s picturesque allure. This marina will also employ crews of local professionals to maintain the yachts that visit the port.
Porto Kòrsou is based in Curaçao and the Netherlands, and its ultimate goal is to enhance the overall well-being of Curaçao through the development of sustainable and economically auspicious activities. In addition to Plaza Porto Kòrsou, their other prospective projects are a recycling center, a waste-to-energy factory, and a yacht marina. And the great news is that they already have a considerable network of corporate investors both locally and abroad who are very interested in the potential that the island has to offer.
