On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Michelle Metsch, Chairperson of Down Town Management Organization (DMO), paid an official visit to His Excellency Mauritsz de Kort, Governor of Curaçao. Ms. Metsch was accompanied by fellow DMO board members Thijs de Bruin (Secretary), Jeanette Bonet (Board Member and Property Owners Chair), Willem Jonckheer (Board Member), and Marco Cheis (Board Member).
During the meeting at the Governor’s office, the DMO delegation presented its plans for the development and revitalization of Punda, one of the oldest and most historic districts in Willemstad. Punda is known for its vibrant architecture, cultural heritage, and distinctive urban character, and has been a focus of community and economic planning efforts in recent years.
The discussions covered key priorities, including improvements to the business climate in the city center and measures to enhance the livability and overall experience of Willemstad for residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs. The delegation and Governor de Kort also spoke about the strategic importance of Punda’s redevelopment in supporting sustainable city growth.
The meeting comes at a time when the role of the Governor in Curaçao is evolving with a renewed focus on engagement and community-level outreach. Governor Mauritsz de Kort was officially installed as Curaçao’s new governor in November 2025, following his appointment earlier in the year. He has emphasized a connected and modern style of leadership that seeks direct dialogue with institutions and societal partners.
DMO’s visit reflects a broader push by local stakeholders to align revitalization efforts with government priorities, reinforcing cooperation between civic organizations and public leadership. The organization continues to advocate for initiatives that preserve Punda’s heritage while creating conditions for economic activity and community wellbeing.
As the development plans progress, DMO and its partners are expected to engage further with government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and community representatives to refine strategies that support Punda’s growth and long-term sustainability.
